Stephen joined staff at The Co-operative Food store in Llanrumney on Friday, to back a campaign calling on shoppers to show respect for retail workers.
Joined by Labour Assembly Member Vaughan Gething and Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Cardiff Central Jo Stevens, Stephen’s visit was in support of national shopworkers’ union Usdaw’s “Freedom from Fear Campaign”, and its Respect for Shopworkers Week, which ran from November 11 to 15.
The Co-operative is backing Usdaw’s campaign and has taken a leading role in tackling retail crime.
Stephen said: “I have been delighted to support this crucial campaign for the last two years and praise the work that Usdaw and The Co-operative are doing.
“As someone who was personally threatened in a public facing role in the past, I know how frightening personal attacks and abuse can be. Our shop workers deserve better.”
Mark Roberts, The Co-operative Food’s Regional Stores Director for Wales, added: “We are proud to once again to be working with Usdaw to support this important initiative and raise awareness of the ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign.
“The Co-operative’s food stores provide an essential service to local communities, that many people rely on in the run up to Christmas, and anti-social behaviour by a minority can have a devastating impact.
“However, it’s also a time of year shops are crowded and people are more stressed, so this is an important reminder that everyone, including retail workers, deserve respect.”
